I was born and raised In Tuscaloosa Alabama, the home of the University of Alabama and where the phrase “Roll Tide” isn’t just a cheer for a college football team…it’s a way of life.
Like in Italy where people say ciao for hello and goodbye, people in Alabama, and more specifically Tuscaloosa, are known for using the famous phrase as an answer to many questions, so locals know you have to put the phrase in context. For example, say someone introduces you to another person, a Tuscaloosa native may greet them with a resounding “Roll Tide,” which can mean, “hello and welcome. It’s nice to meet you!” Or “good to have you here!”
After school, I moved to the Atlanta area at the age of 23, and I’ve been here ever since. While I don’t utter the phrase “Roll Tide” as much as I used to, I still say it from time to time, which can only mean you can take the girl out of Alabama, but you can’t take the Alabama out of the girl!
Roll Tide, y’all!
